Log 001: Every Wizard Needs an Apprentice.
At Wizard Leak Detection, we’ve built our reputation across Mandurah by using the absolute best technology available—from acoustic sensors to thermal imaging—to track down hidden water leaks before they cause major damage.
But we believe in always looking for the next innovation. And our newest venture is currently three months old, has four legs, and possesses the most advanced sensor on the planet: a working dog’s nose.
Meet Echo, our Australian Shepherd recruit-in-training, and the star of Project Echo.
The Vision: A High-Tech Nose for Mandurah
If you’ve seen Echo around town, she’s hard to miss. Aside from her high Aussie energy, she has striking, mismatched eyes—one brilliant blue and one deep brown. But while she might look like a magical wizard's familiar, her future job is pure science.
Scent-detection dogs are incredibly effective at tracking down the minute scent of underground water leaks, even through concrete and deep soil. Our ultimate goal is to pair Echo’s incredible natural tracking instincts with our existing commercial equipment to offer the most precise leak detection service in the Peel region.
The Reality: Safety and Obedience First
Before Echo can start sniffing out broken water mains, she has to master the basics. A commercial job site can be a hazardous place, and a customer’s home deserves absolute respect. That's why our focus right now isn't on water leaks at all—it's on bulletproof obedience.
This month, we are focusing heavily on two critical commands:
"Stay" (Site Boundaries): Teaching Echo to remain safely on her designated training mat, completely ignoring the temptation to investigate heavy tools, open trenches, or utility trucks.
"Leave It" (Impulse Control): Australian Shepherds are visual herding dogs wired to chase fast movements. We are actively training her to ignore passing birds, local wildlife, and distractions, turning her focus instantly back to me.
Where to find us: We’ve officially taken our training out of the living room and into the real world. We are currently "proofing" her focus at local Mandurah parks and quieter, controlled job sites to get her used to the everyday rhythms of the trade.
What’s Next?
Echo is proving to be incredibly eager to please, even if that Aussie puppy stubbornness kicks in whenever a Mandurah seagull flies past!
We are building her foundation slowly, methodically, and safely. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be documenting her transition from basic obedience to her very first introductions to target water scents.
Thanks for following along on our journey from puppy to professional. If you see us training at the foreshore, come say hello!
